The number of victims who suffer from “Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony” (hereinafter referred to as “Shincheonji” or “Shincheonji Church”) which is represented and established by Mr. Man Hee Lee, has been rapidly increasing in the last decade. This cult organization has tempted general Christians into wrongful religious beliefs with many diverse methods and such temptation has destroyed churches and Christian families.

신천지예수교증거장막성전(대표 이만희, 신천지)으로 인한 피해사례가 급증하고 있다. 갈수록 진화하는 신천지 포교전략은 다양한 방법으로 기성교회 교인을 포교하고, 교회를 분열시키며 가정을 파괴하는 등 큰 피해를 안겨주고 있다.

Even in this moment, many mothers whose sons and daughters never come back home after joining this cult, are protesting against this organization, in front of its head office located at Gwacheon, Korea. Many men gave up their jobs to find their wives who fell in this Shincheonji. Then, what is the Shincheonji which causes this much troubles in the society?

과천 신천지 본부 앞에서는 신천지에 미혹된 후 가출한 아들, 딸을 찾는 어머니들의 1인 시위가 진행 중에 있고, 가출한 아내를 찾아 생업까지 포기한 남편들의 한숨이 잦아지고 있다. 이처럼 사회적 물의를 일으키는 신천지는 과연 어떤 단체인가?

Who is “Man Hee Lee”?
신천지 이만희는 누구인가?

Mr. Man Hee Lee was born at Hyun-ri, Punggak-myeon, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea, on 15th September, 1931. He moved to Geumho-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul when he was 17 and worked as a temporary worker in many construction sites. At that time, a missionary recommended him to go to church and he attended at the church where he was baptized. A fewyears after his baptism, he came back to his hometown. He joined Punggak Presbyterian Church and started his church life in earnest.

이만희는 1931년 9월 15일 경북 청도군 풍각면 현리에서 태어났다. 17세 때 서울 성동구 금호동에 기거하며 건축업을 하던 중, 전도사에게 이끌려 경복궁 앞 천막교회에서 세례를 받았다. 고향에 내려가 풍각장로교회에 출석하며 본격적으로 신앙생활을 시작했다.

He did not stay in this Presbyterian church long, but he moved to Seoul again and joined Shinangchon established by Tae Seon Park.1) Mr. Lee did not stay in this cult long. In 1967, he left Shinangchon and joined another cult called as “Temple of Tabernacle”established by Mr. Jae Yeol Yu.2) Nevertherless, Mr. Man Hee Lee and Mr. Jae Yeol Yu became alienated from each other. Mr. Lee left this organization by claiming that Mr. Jae Yeol Yu took his property. In September 1971, Mr. Man Hee Lee accused Mr. Jae Yeol Yu and Mr. Chang Do Kim, a follower of Mr. Yu, for fraud.

서울로 돌아온 그는 전도관 박태선의 신앙촌에 있다가 이탈하여 1967년 장막성전을 이끌던 유재열의 집회에 참석한 후 그를 따르게 된다. 이후 재산을 빼앗기고 사기를 당했다며 이탈한다. 1971년 9월, 유재열과 신도 김창도를 고소해 법정에 세우기도 했다.

In 1978, Mr. Lee joined Solomon Creation (Changjo) Church established by Mr. Man Bong Baek who had been designated as Solomon by Mr. Yu, as one of twelve disciples in the Temple of Tabernacle. This Solomon Creation Church is also a cult organization. Afterwards, Mr. Lee gained supports from some of believers in this
Solomon Creation Church and established Shincheonji Centeral Church, as known as Shincheonji Church in 1984.

1978년에는 장막성전에서 ‘솔로몬’(영명)으로 통하던 백만봉을 추종하며 ‘솔로몬 창조교회’12사도 중 한 명으로 있었다. 이후 1984년 자신을 따르는 세력을 규합해 경기도 안양에 신천지 중앙교회를 설립했다.

In early days of this Shincheonji Church, Mr. Lee and Mr. Jong Hyo Hong, another founder of Shincheonji Church called themselves as “Two Witnesses” and “Moses and Aron”. Lee was in charge of sermon and preach, Hong was in charge of service management and prayer. They split in 1987 for trivial and minor trouble. Mr. Hong insisted that he is only true “Jesus Christ” and established an organization in Hong jae-dong, Seoul, but he died in about 2012 (the exact date of Mr. Hong’s death is not known).

초기에는 이만희와 홍종효 두 사람을 각각 ‘두 증인’, ‘모세와 아론’으로 지칭하며 이만희가 설교를, 홍종효가 예배의 사회와 기도를 맡아 교회를 이끌었다. 두 사람은 1987년 사소한 문제로 결별했다. 홍종효는 자신만이 ‘진짜 예수’라고 주장하며 서울 홍제동에 증거장막성전을 세워 활동하다가 2012년 경 사망했다.

Lee has imitated Yu’s Temple of Tabernacle. Mr. Lee insists “New Promise made by Blood” which means that a new promise shall be delivered only by his blood.3) Also, he asserts that a new and spiritual Israel will be established with his blood and only his followers can become chosen people of God. To this end, Mr. Lee gives written appointment to his followers. He calls himself as “paraclete” and “winner”. Followers of Mr. Lee believe that he is immortal and the Savior of this generation.

이만희는 과거 유재열의 장막성전을 답습했다. ‘피로 세운 새언약’이라고 하여 자신의 피를 뽑아 새 언약(새 언약서 뒷면에 는 피로 그은 십자가가 있다)을 맺고, 이를 통해 영적 새 이스라엘 나라의 선민이 된다며 추종자들에게‘ 사령장’을 나눠주었다. 이만희는 스스로를 ‘보혜사’, ‘이긴 자’라 칭한다. 신천지 신도들은 이만희를 육체로 영생불사하는 이 시대의 구원자로 믿고 있다.

What does Shincheonji insist?
신천지는 무엇을 주장하는가?

In Shincheonji, the bible is a book of secrets. Also, Shincheonji insists that “the Book of Revelations of St. John” describes the future events and secrets of such future events and it is a book of code. Shincheonji claims that the salvation could only be brought by a person sent by the Holy Spirit with a great mission. In other words, the followers may achieve the salvation via a person sent by Holy Spirit, i.e. a good shepherd, by listening the shepherd’s preach, seeing the shepherd, believing this shepherd as a Redeemer, and protecting this shepherd. And in Shincheonji,the person sent by the Holy Spirit and a good shepherd refer to Mr. Man Hee Lee.

신천지가 말하는 성경은 비유와 비사로 기록된 상징의 말씀이다. 특히 요한계시록은 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해 비유와 비사로 기록됐다. 특히 요한계시록은 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해 비유, 비사로 기록됐고, 성경은 암호로 기록된 말씀이라고 가르친다. 이들은 구원에 대해 “오늘날 성령으로 온 지상 사명자 즉 약속한 목자로부터 듣고, 보고, 믿고, 지키는 자가 구원을 받는다”고 주장한다. 여기서 ‘성령으로 온 지상 사명자’는 이만희씨를 지칭한다.

Additionally, Shincheonji asserts that Jesus Christ does not come on the cloud (as mentioned in Revelations 1:6), but he comes as a spirit at a night without a single light and the spirit resides in a human being. At the and of these assertions of Shincheonji and Mr. Man Hee Lee, Shincheonji claims that Mr. Man Hee Lee is a Paraclete in flesh and blood who directly receives divine messages from God and Mr. Man Hee Lee is a person in whom the Holy Spirit resides.

또 예수님은 실제 구름을 타고 오시는 것이 아니며 빛이 없는 밤에 인자인 한 육체의 사명자에게 영으로 임한다고 주장한다. 결국 이만희씨는 자신이 보혜사 성령으로부터 직접 계시를 받은 ‘보혜사 육’이라는 것이다.

Furthermore, Mr. Man Hee Lee claims that the new Jerusalem will be started from the head office of Shincheonji located at the Gwacheon and this insistence is prescribed in the [Complete Explanation: The Book of Revelations of St. John] written by Mr. Man Hee Lee. The followings are quotes from his book “ I (Man Hee Lee) do not make unreasonable claims. Korea is the sun-rising place having the seal of the living God (Revelation 7:2), as prescribed in the bible. This is because the end of the East (Asian continent) where the sun rises shall be Korean peninsular. Then where is the exact location of the sun-rising place having God’s seal? According to Chapter 25 of Exodus, God built the tabernacle where he will stay and seven lamps in it. Therefore, the place where seven lamps exist is the tabernacle where God stays.”

나아가 이씨는 그의 저서 『계시록 완전해설』에서 신천지 본부(과천)에서 새하늘 새예루살렘이 시작된다고 주장한다. “필자(이만희씨)는 해 돋는 동방사람이라 해서 억지로 동방이라고 끌어다 붙이는 것이 아니라 성경에 말씀하신 그대로요, 본대로이다. 동방 해 돋는 극동이 우리나라라는 것은 틀림없는데 우리나라 중 그곳은 어디일까? 출애굽기 25장에서 본바 하나님께서 자기가 거하실 장막을 지으시고 그 안에 일곱 등잔을 만들었다. 그러므로 우리나라 일곱 금촛대가 있는 곳이 하나님이 계신 장막이 된다.”

As mentioned above, Shincheonji asserts that, at the time of the second advent of Chirst, Jesus does not come on the cloud. Shincheonji insists that Jesus Christ comes as the Holy Spirit in very dark night without a single light and such holy spirit stays witha human being in flesh and blood. It is obvious that Shincheonji conclusively claims that Mr. Man Hee Lee is the Paraclete and a person in whom the Holy Spirit resides. Also they claim that the salvation will only exist under this doctrine. At the beginning of the establishment, Shincheonji asserted that new sky and land will be started at Gwacheon when the number of followers becomes 144,000 and only these followers will be redeemed. However, Shincheonji changed its doctrine when the number of followers exceeded 144,000. Shincheonji now insists that 144,000 believers who have been sealed by God and others in white clothes shall be redeemed.

재림 예수님은 실제 구름을 타고 오시는 것이 아니다. 재림은 빛이 없는 밤에 인자인 한 육체의 사명자(이만희 지칭)에게 성령이 임하시는 것을 말한다. ‘이만희가 보혜사 성령이며 신천지에만 구원이 있고 신천지 신도 14만 4000명이 모이면 새하늘 새 땅이 과천에서 시작되며 신천지인만 구원을 받는다’는 것이다. 하지만 신도 14만 4000명이 채워지자, 구원의 조건을 ‘인 맞은’ 14만 4000명과 ‘흰무리’로 교리를 변개했다.

The Presbyterian Church of Korea (80th General Meeting in 1995) pointed out problems of the Shincheonji’s doctrines, as follows: 예장통합(1995년 제80회 총회)은 신천지의 교리에 대해 다음과 같이 그 문제점을 지적하고 있다.

1. Outline
개요

Mr. Man Hee Lee left the Temple of the Tabernacle(of which religious secret leader was Jae Yeol Yu)and firstly established Shincheonji Church at Anyang. Mr. Lee published books named as [Complete Explanation of Revelation, Eternal Gospel and New Song], [Truth of Revelation, the Secret of Heaven], [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book], and etc., via a publishing company named as “Shincheonji Publishing Company”. These books are anti-Christ books, since they describe the events occurred during the time of the Temple of Tabernacles as events of the end of the world and these books misinterpret the bible in accordance with these events.

이만희는 장막성전(당시 교주 유재열)에서 이탈하여 안양에 신천지교회(신천지예수교증거장막성전)라는 것을 세웠다. 이씨는 ‘도서출판 신천지’를 통해서 『영원한 복음 새노래 계시록완전해설』, 『천국비밀 계시록의 진상』, 『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀계시록의 진상 2』 등의 책을 펴냈는데, 이 책들은 장막성전에 서 일어난 일을 말세의 사건으로 보고 거기에 맞추어 성경을 억지로 해석한 반 기독교적인 책들이다.

Shincheonji operates a free Bible Institute (Christian Institute of Theology). This institue tempts normal Christians into wrongful religious beliefs by providing free lectures and this institute uses the books written by Mr. Man Hee Lee as textbooks.

무료성경신학원(또는 기독교신학원)이란 곳에서는 무료로 성경을 가르쳐 준다고 선전함으로 성도들을 미혹하고 있는데 여기에서 사용되는 교재들은 이만희가 저술한 책들과 그의 사상을 토대로 만들어진 것들이다.

2. Doctrine of Revelation
계시론

Mr. Lee claims that Chapter 24 of the Gospel of Matthew and the Revelations are only new promises of God (refers to p. 522 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]) and the New Testament and Old Testament are invalid (refers to p.27 of [Complete Explanation of Revelation, Eternal Gospel and New Song]).이씨는 마태복음 24장과 요한계시록만 새 언약이며(『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상2』 p.522), 신약과 구약은 무효라고 한다(『영원한 복음 새노래 계시록 완전해설』 p.27).

3. Doctrine of Jesus Christ
기독론

Under Shincheonji’s doctrines, not only the Incarnation, but also the sanctity of Jesus Christ is denied. According to one of Mr. Lee’s books, it says that “Jesus Christ is not God in blood and flesh, but a person in whom the Holy Spirit resides.” (refers to p.40 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book])

이만희에 의하면 예수님의 성육신뿐만 아니라 예수님의 신성까지 부인된다. 그의 책에 따르면 “예수님은 육신을 입고 오신 하나님이 아니라 성령이 인간 예수의 육체에 임하심으로 하나님의 아들이 되었다”고 한다(『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상 2』 p.40).

4. Soteriology
구원론

(1)Mr. Lee insists that the salvation shall not be achieved by faith and belief, but it shall be achieved by meeting a Johannine missioner (refers to p.52 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]). He also insists that the eternity may be achieved by listening and keeping the texts given by such Johannine missioner (Paraclete) (refers to p.537 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]) and beilivers may access to Jesus Christ only through such Johannine missioner (refers to pp.179~180 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]).

요한적인 사명자를 만나야 한다고 하며(『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상 2』 p.52), 사도 요한적인 사명자(보혜사)의 말씀을 듣고 지켜야만 영생에 이르며(『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상 2』 p.537), 요한을 말미암지 않고는 예수님에게 올 자가 없다(『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상 2』pp.179~180)고 한다.

(2) Mr. Lee also asserts that “a truthful messenger who conveys the messages shown and informed by Jesus Christ (i.e the Holy Spirit) comes and he is now spreading the gospel of the eternity.” (refer to p. 46 of [Complete Explanation of Revelation, Eternal Gospel and New Song]). Mr. Lee implies himself as a representative of God and/or Johannine Paraclete, identical to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and even Jesus Christ, based on his insistence prescribed in his books. He asserts that his books are (a) God’s words for churches written by himself in whom the Holy Spirit resides and (b) publicly revealed Revelations which contains the secrets of Revelations sealed by seven seals (refers to p.7 and p.46 of [Complete Explanation of Revelation, Eternal Gospel and New Song]).

(2) 이씨는 “성령이신 예수께서 직접 보여주고 들려주신 것을 전하는 진리의 한 사자가 출현하여 영생의 말씀을 전파하고 있다”(『영원한 복음 새노래 계시록 완전해설』 p.46)면서, 자신의 책을 “성령이 나를 통해서 교회들에게 하시는 말씀”이며 “일곱 인으로 봉한 하나님의 책 계시록의 비밀이 이제 개봉되어 만천하에 공개되는 계시”(『영원한 복음 새노래 계시록 완전해설』 p.7)라고 함으로 자신을 아담, 노아, 아브라함, 모세, 예수와 동등한 대언자 또는 사도 요한적인 보혜사로 암시하고 있다(『영원한 복음 새노래 계시록 완전해설』 p.46).

5.The doctrine of God
신론

(1)The trinity explained by Mr. Man Hee Lee is totally different from the Holy Trinity of traditional Christianchurch. Mr. Lee compares the Holy Trinity to people in the Old Testament; Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In his book, he explains the Trinity as follow: “the father (Abraham), also known as holy spirit gave a birth of son (Isaac) and the son who also has holy spirit, gave birth of his son (Jacob), the paraclete, and this shall be called as the Trinity (refers to p.37 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]), and this indicates that the Trinity means the Holy Spirit which becomes Jesus Christ and the Johannine missioner in whom the Holy Spirit resides (refers to p.306 of [Truth of Revelations, the Secret of Heaven]).”

(1) 이씨가 말하는 삼위일체는 정통교회의 삼위일체와 전혀 다른 것이다. 이씨는 구약의 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱을 삼위 일체에 비유하여 “성령이신 성부(아브라함)는 성자 예수(이삭)를 낳았고 성령이신 예수(이삭)는 성자 보혜사(야곱)를 낳으셨으니 이것이 삼위이다” (『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상 2』 p.37)라고 하는데, 이는 성령이 예수와 하나 되신 후에 다시 그 성령과 하나 된 예수의 영이 지상의 사명자 육체에 임함으로 삼위일체가 이루어지는 것이 된다는 말이다(『천국비밀계시록의 진상』 p.306).

(2)Mr. Man Hee Lee’s view toward God shall be described as pantheism. He teaches his followers that the events in the Revelations are a war between the Holy Spirit and evil spirits and the Holy Spirit is an opposite to the evil spirit, not the one of three pillars of the Holy Trinity. Furthermore, he explains that souls of the martyrs decapitated are holy spirits (refers to pp.210~211 of [Complete Explanation of Revelation, Eternal Gospel and New Song]), and he asserts that the Paraclete is not the Holy Spirit (God),but a human being as a representative of God. Based on these assertions of Mr. Lee, his doctrine of God shall be described as pantheism.

(2) 이씨의 신관은 결국 범신론이다. 이씨는 계시록의 사건을 성령과 악령의 싸움으로 해석하면서, ‘성령’을 삼위일체 하나님의 한 위가 아닌 악령의 반대 개념으로 가르치고 있다. 더구나 목 베인 순교자들의 영혼도 성령이라고 하고(『영원한 복음새노래 계시록 완전해설』 pp.210~211) ‘보혜사’를 성령(하나님)이 아닌 ‘대언자로서의 인간’이라고 함으로 그의 신관은 범신론이라 할 수밖에 없다.

6.Eschatology
종말론

Mr. Lee insists that Cheonggye Mountain located at Gwacheon where the Temple of Tabernacle was firstly established is the the place where the End described in Revelations is fulfilled (refers to pp.49~50 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]and p.227 of [Complete Explanation of Revelation, Eternal Gospel and New Song]). According to his insistences, all events which will be occurred at the time of end of the world will be completed in the Shincheonji Church (refers to pp.300~301, p.306 of [Truth of Revelation 2, Secret of Heaven’s Book]).

이씨는 요한계시록의 예언 성취(종말)의 장소를 장막성전이 시작되었던 한국의 과천 소재 청계산이라고 하면서 (『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상2』 pp.49~50, p.469, 『영원한 복음 새노래 계시록 완전해설』p.227), ‘신천지예수교증거장막 성전’에서 종말의 사건이 완성된다고 암시하고 있다(『하늘에서 온 책의 비밀 계시록의 진상2』 pp.300~301, p.306).

7.Conclusion of Study
 연구결론

Man Hee Lee actually has copied the doctrines of the Temple of Tabernacle (of which leader was Jae Yeol Yu) and Mr. Lee’s doctrines regarding Revelation, Jesus Christ, God, and his Soteriology and Eschatology shall not be seen as reasonable Christian doctrines, but a cult. Therefore, Christians shall not attend at the Shincheonji Church and other Shincheonji institutes which teach Mr. Lee’s doctrines and insistences. These shall be prohibited.

이만희는 장막성전(당시 교주 유재열) 계열로서, 그가 가르치고 있는 계시론, 신론, 기독론,구원론, 종말론 등 대부분의 교리는 도저히 기독교적이라고 볼 수 없는 이단이다. 따라서 이런 이씨의 교리나 주장을 가르치고 따르고 있는 신천지 교회(신천지예수교증거장막성전)나 무료성경신학원(기독교신학원)에 우리 총회 산하 교인들이 가는 것을 금해야 한다.

Current Status of the Shincheonji Church 2018
2018년 신천지 교세 현황

Shincheonji Church insists that the number of its followers has been increasing around eight (8) % in every year since 2016, as follows:▲2016,172,775followers ▲2017,186,175 followers ▲2018, 202,899 followers.According to “Current Status of Shincheonji Church 2018”, the financial current status for general meeting of Shincheonji is KRW 82,118,000,000 and the financial current status for twelve branches4) of Shincheonji Is KRW 211,976,420,000. The real estates owned by Shincheonji Church are as follows: 71 temples, 266 missionary centers, 100 offices, and 921 real estates other than the main church and center(gospel rooms, fake churches, fake culture centers, and etc.).

The estimated overall value of real estatesis about KRW 237,379,000,000. In this current status document, not only the Korean followers, but also foreign followers arerecorded. In 2016, Shincheonji operated 79 missionary centers worldwide, and in 2017,the number of missionary centers increased by 48 and became 127 missionary centers. In 2018, the totalnumber of missionary centers becomes 167. The number of foreign followers of Shincheonji was 645 in 2000, but in 2018 it became 22,478. According to the internal documents published by Shincheonji,Shincheonji has been steadily grown. However,such growth may be manipulated by each branch which were forced to attract more people by Mr.Lee.

신천지는 ▲2016년 17만 2775명 ▲2017년 18만 6175명 ▲2018년 20만 2899명 매년 약 8% 정도 성장해왔다고 주장한다. ‘2018 신천지 교세 현황’ 자료에 따르면, 총회 재정은 821억 1800만 원이며 12지파[편집자 주: 신천지는 전국을 12개 지파로 나누어 체제를 유지하고 있다 ] 재정은 2119억 7642만 원이다. 부동산은 성전 71개, 선교센터 266개, 사무실 100개 기타(복음방, 위장교회,위장문화센터 등) 921개를 소유하고 있다.

이는 약 2373억 7900만 원의 가치다. 자료에는 국내뿐만 아니라 해외 신도 통계도 기록되어 있었다. 신천지는 2016년 해외 각국에 79개소의 센터를 보유하고 있었고, 2017년엔 127개소로 48개소가 늘어났다. 2018년엔 총 167개로 전년 대비 40개가 늘어났다. 신도 수는 2000년도 645명이었으나 2018년 현재 2만 2478명으로 상승했다. 신천지 내부 자료만 보았을 땐 신천지가 꾸준히 성장한 것으로 보인다. 하지만 이만희의 신도 수 증가 요구에 대한 각 지파별 허위 확대보고 가능성도 제기되고 있다.
