The Unification Church (Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) (hereinafter the “Unification hurch”) has been in a serious chaos, after the death of Mr. Sun Myung Moon, the leader of the Unification Church (hereinafter referred to as “Leader Moon” or “Leader”), since the Unification Church fails to conclude who will be an official and sole successor of this huge cult organization and Leader. Ms Hak Ja Han, Leader’s wife and Mr. Hyung Jin Moon, the last son of Leader radically insist that he or she is only successor of Leader Moon, respectively, and they are in the middle of lawsuit to figure out the true heir of Leader Moon. Ms Han insists that she is the only begotten daughter of God in last six thousand year long of human history, but Mr.Moon criticizes his mother, Ms Han, as a lewd woman and a blood of Satan.

통일교는 문선명 사망 후 후계 문제로 혼란이 가중되고 있다. 부인 한학자와 아들 문형진은 서로 자신이 후계자라고 주장하고 있으며, 이로 인해 법적인 싸움이 진행 중이다. 한학자는 자신을 6000년 만에 탄생한 독 생녀로 주장하고, 문형진은 한학자를 음녀, 사탄의 핏줄이라고 비난하며 불안한 발걸음을 이어가고 있다.

1. Who is the Leader Moon?

Leader Moon, a son of a farmer from a Christian family, was born at 2221, Sangsa-ri, Deokeonmyeon, Jungju-gun, Pyeonganbukdo, on January 6th, 1920. Leader Moon was fascinated by mysticism and occultism in hisschool days and he claimed that he listened God’s voice and received message from God, on April 17th, 1936, when he became sixteen. Leader Moon graduated his high school located Seoul and he went to Japan for his university life. He attended Waseda University and his major was the electricity engineering. When Japan lost the Second World War and Korea became an independent nation, Leader Moon came back to Korea and established Gwanghye Church in Pyongyang.

1. 문선명은 누구인가?

문선명씨는 1920년 1월 6일 평안북도 정주군 덕언면 상사리 2221번지에서 기독교 가정의 농민의 아들로 태어났다. 문씨는 학생시절부터 신비주의적인 체험에 열광했고, 16세 되던 1936년 4월 17일 하늘의 계시를 받고 하나님의 음성을듣게 됐다고 주장했다. 서울에서 고등보통학교를 마친 문씨는 일본 와세다 대학에서 전기공학을 전공했으며, 해방되자 일본으로부터 귀국하여 평양에 광해교회를 세웠다.

In 1946, Leader Moon attended to the Israel Abbey founded by Mr. Baek Moon Kim and located at Paju, Gyeonggi-do. Leader Moon studied Mr. Kim’s wrongful interpretation of Bible for six months.¹⁾On June 6th, 1946, Leader Moon crossed the border of South and North Korea and went to Pyongyang and led the mysticism movement. But he was arrested for disturbing public order, specifically gang rape, and adultery (bigamy), since he married a woman, whereas he already had a wife. At the time of January Fourth Retreat,²⁾ Leader Moon retreated to Busan with some of his followers. He founded the Unification Church in Beomil-dong, Sujeong- dong, and Yeong-do of Busan, on January 27th, 1951, and his churches started propagation activities.

1946년 경기도 파주에 있던 김백문씨의 이스라엘수도원을 찾아가 김씨 밑에서 6개월간 성경공부를 한 후 6월 6일 다시 월북해 평양에 도착해 신비주의 운동을 하다가 사회질서 혼란혐의(혼음)로 구속, 또 본처를 두고 여신도 김모씨와 결혼식을 거행해 간음혐의로 구속되는 등 사회적 물의를 일으켰다. 1·4후퇴 때 부산에 내려온 문씨는 자신을 따르던 몇몇 신도와 1951년 1월 27일부터 범일동, 수정동, 영도 등지에서 통일교회를 창설해 포교 활동을 시작했다.

On May 1st, 1954, Leader Moon came back to Seoul. He chose a cottage located at Bukhakdong, Seongdong-gu (Present Muhak-dong), for his church and started propagation activities. He organized the ‘Sanctification Christian Student Union’. And the Unification Church moved from Bukhak-dong to Hongik-dong on January 17th, 1955, and published its magazine named ‘Sanctification’, on March 27th, 1955. On July 4th, 1955, Leader Moon was arrested for disturbing public order and indecency, again.

1954년 5월 1일 서울에 올라온 문씨는 성동구 북학동 초가집에 통일교회라는 간판을 걸고 전도활동을 시작, 성화기독학생회를 조직했고, 1955년 1월 17일에 북학동에서 성동구 홍인동으로 이전해 동년 3월 27일 기관지 『성화』를 창간했다. 1955년 7월 4일 문씨는 ‘사회질서혼란 및 풍기문란 혐의’로 경찰에 다시 구속됐다.

The Unification Church moved its headquarter to Cheongpa-dong, Yongsan, Seoul, on October 7th, 1955, after his imprisonment, and it aggressively put its efforts on the propagation activities. In the beginning of 1958, the Unification Church started its propagation activities in foreign countries and expanded its influence over the world. In 1963, it was registered as a social organization by Korean government authority. Leader Moon visited forty (40) countries for ten months, in 1965, and his book named ‘Explanation of the Divine Principle’ was translated in Spanish, Dutch, and French. The ‘Explanation of the Divine Principle’ had some holes in its theories. These holes were supplemented by the ‘Divine Principle’, another book of Leader Moon.

출감 후 10월 7일 서울시 용산구 청파동으로 본부를 이전해 본격적인 포교활동에 박차를 가하는 한편, 1958년 초부터 해외 선교를 전개해 교세를 확장했다. 1963년 정부에 사회단체를 등록했고, 1965년 10개월간 40개국을 순방했으며 『원리해설』 스페인어, 화란어, 프랑스어판을 출판했다. 이후 『원리해설』 자체의 허점을 보완하여 『원리강론』을 출판했다.

2. What does the Unification Church insist?

The Unification Church divides the Holy Bible into three parts: Old Testament, New Testament, and Completed Testament. In the Unification Church, the Completed Testament is the ‘Divine Principle’, the doctrine book of the Unification Church. The main doctrines of the Unification Church are a) the doctrine of depravity and b) the doctrine of redemption-salvation. However, the Divine Principle is not a new theology independently created by Leader Moon, but only a copy of ‘Basic Principle of Christianity’ written by Mr. Baek Moon Kim.

2. 통일교는 무엇을 주장하는가?

통일교는 성서를 구약, 신약, 성약(成約)으로 구분하는데 이 성약서가 통일교 교리서인 『원리강론』이며, 핵심적인 주요 교리는 타락론과 복귀론(구원론)이다. 『원리강론』은 통일교의 독자적인 교리체계라기보다는, 김백문의 『기독교근본원리』의 형식과 내용을 그대로 차용하고 있다.

1) Eve who had spiritual adultery with Satan The event of the Tree of Knowledge in the Genesis of the Holy Bible was explained in the Divine Principle as follows:
1) 사탄과 영적 간음한 하와 통일교 원리강론에서는 창세기 2장 17절의 선악과 사건을 놓고 다음과 같이 설명하고 있다.

▶ Eve ate the fruit of Satan, a symbol of the love between Eve and the Satan, and she gave birth of the Satan’s heirs. Such love created the sinful human history and society. The event of the Tree of Knowledge means sexual connection between Eve and Satan, based on the love for Satan. (The Divine Principle, pp.81-82)

▶ “해와는 사탄을 중심한 악의 사랑으로 악과(惡果)를 따먹고 악의 피와 살을 받아 악의 혈통을 번식하여 죄악의 사회를 이루었다. 따라서 해와가 선악과를 따먹었다고 하는 것은 그가 사탄을 중심한 사랑에 의하여 서로 혈연관계(血緣關係)를 맺었다는 것을 뜻하는 것이다.”(『원리강론』 81~82쪽)

▶ Directly after Eve had a relationship with a fallen angel in the non-completed period, she had relationship with Adam. Adam became doomed and corrupted, because of Eve’s relationship with Satan. (The Divine Principle,p. 88)

▶ “해와가 미완성기에서 천사장과 불륜한 혈연관계(血緣關係)를 맺은 후, 다시 뒤미처 아담과 부부의 관계를 맺었기 때문에 아담도 역시 미완성기에서 타락되었다.”(『원리강론』 88쪽)

In other words, the Unification Church claims that Eve and Satan had an adultery relationship and Eve’s body was corrupted by such relationship. It argues that, since Adam had relationship with Eve without God’s permission in the non-completed period, Adam and Eve’s relationship was also corrupted, and their children were children of Satan. In the Unification Church’s doctrine, this world is under control of heirs of Adam and Eve and this means this world is under control of Satan.

즉 하와가 사탄과 더불어 불륜한 음행관계를 가짐으로써 미완성기에 사탄의 혈통을 받았고, 하나님의 허락 없이 역시 미완성기에 있는 아담과 육적혈연을 맺음으로 아담 또한 사탄의 더러운 혈통을 이어받게 됐다는 것이다. 그러므로 사탄의 혈통을 받아 아담과 하와 사이에서 태어난 인류는 자손대대로 사탄의 자식들이 되어 원죄가 있는 악인들이며, 이런 악인들로 구성된 이 세상은 사탄의 지배 하에 악의 주권이 지배한다고 주장하고 있다.

Accordingly, the Unification Church insists that God will bring the heaven on the earth by completing the Four Position Foundation which consists of Adam, Eve, and children without original sins, and after their death, God will create heaven in the sky.

따라서 통일교는 하나님께서 아담, 하와, 원죄 없는 선한 자녀로 형성된 사위기대(四位基坮)를 완성하여 지상천국을 이루고, 창조이상세계를 이루고 죽은 후에는 천상천국을 건설한다고 주장하고 있다.

2) Jesus Christ’s Failure

The Unification Church denies sanctity of Jesus Christ and it insists that Jesus Christ completes only redemption and salvation for soul and spirit, not for body and flesh of humans.

2) 예수의 육적 구속 사업의 실패
 

통일교는 예수님의 신성을 부정한다. 또한 예수의 구속사업은 영적인 면에서만 완성됐고, 육적인 면에서는 실패했다고주장하고 있다.

▶ Jesus Christ was a human without original sin, and became a spiritual man, so did his disciples in the spiritual world, after Jesus Christ’s resurrection. (the Divine Principle, p.231)

▶ “예수님은 지상에 있어서도 원죄(原罪)가 없다는 점을 제외 한다면 그는 우리와 조금도 다름이 없는 인간이었고, 또 부활후 영계에 있어서도 제자들과 다름없이 영인체로서 계신다.”(『원리강론』 231쪽)

▶ If Jesus Christ was God himself, how could God be tested by Satan and hung at the Cross? (the Divine Principle, p. 231)

▶ “만일 예수님이 하나님 자신이라면, 어떻게 하나님이 사탄의 시험을 받고 또 사탄에 몰려 십자가에 달리는 등의 일이있을 수 있을 것인가?”(『원리강론』 231쪽)

▶ Since Jesus Christ came to the world as the Messiah for saving the world and accomplishing redemption and salvation for human beings, he had to complete the salvation for both spirit and body of human beings. …… However, Jewish did not believe Jesus Christ as the Messiah, and hung him at the Cross. At this event of the Cross, Jesus Christ was murdered with Satan’s interruption. Therefore, Christians who believe in Jesus Christ whose body was intruded by Satan are also deemed as intruded by Satan. Even though they are such devout Christians, their bodies may not be redeemed by Jesus Christ’s Cross. (the Divine Principle, pp.160~161)

▶ “예수님이 메시아로 강림하셨던 목적이 구원섭리를 완수하시려는데 있었으므로, 그는 영적 구원과 육적 구원을 아울러 완성하셔야만 되었다. (중략) 그러나 유대인들이 예수님을 불신하여 그를 십자가에 내주었으므로 그의 육신은 사탄의 침범을 당하여 마침내 살해되었던 것이다. 그러므로 육신에 사탄의 침범을 당한 예수님을 믿어 그와 한 몸을 이룬 신도들의 육신도 그대로 사탄의 침범을 당하게 된 것이다. 이렇게 되어 아무리 독실한 신앙자라도 예수님의 십자가의 속죄로써는 육적 구원은 완성할 수없게 되었다 .” (『원 리 강 론 』160~161쪽) 이처럼 통일교는 타락한 인류 구원을 위해 예수는 십자가를 통해서 영적 구속사업을 완성 했으나 육적 구속사업에 실패했으므로 재림주가 나타나 영육이 완성된 구속사업을 해야한다고 주장하고 있다.

3) Second Coming of Christ from the East The Unification Church insists that the Second Coming of Christ will be born in a specific area. The Unification Church quotes the Revelation Chapter 7, verse 2 that ‘ascending from the East having the seal of the living God’ and insists that ‘the East’ is Korea.

3) 동방의 재림주 문선명

통일교는 재림할 메시아는 어느 특정한 지역에 재림할 것을 주장하고 있다. 요한계시록 7장 2절의 “동방의 해 돋는 나라”에 재림주가 임한다는 성서의 기록을 인용하여 그 “해 돋는 나라는 바로 한국”이라고 말하고 있다.

▶ In common sense, the ‘East’ usually means Korea, Japan and China. Japan is a nation which traditionally believes in its King.³⁾ ……China is a communist country. Therefore, Japan and China belongs to the earth and
Satan who controls the earth. Conclusively, the East where the Second Coming of Christ will be born is Korea. (the Divine Principle,pp. 550~551)

▶ “자고로 동방나라는 한국,일본, 중국 등 동양 3국을 말한다. 그런데 그중의 일본은 대대로 천조대신을 숭배해온 나라로서, 더구나 전체주의국가로서 재림기를 당하였었고, (중략) 중국은 공산화해 온 나라이다. 그렇기 때문에 이 두 나라는 모두 사탄편의 국가인 것이다. 그러므로 단적으로 말해서 예수님이 재림하실 동방의 그 나라는 바로 한국인 것이다.” (『원리강론』 550~551쪽)

Then who is the Second Coming of Christ from the East? According to the Divine Principle, ‘God sent a person for solving fundamental issues of lives of humans and space in the sky. The person is Mr. Sun Myung Moon’.
In other words, the Unification Church’s Second Coming of Christ is Leader Moon.

그렇다면 통일교에서 주장하는 한국에 재림할 재림주는 누구일까? 『원리강론』 총서에 의하면 “하나님은 이미 이 땅 위에 인생과 우주의 근본 문제를 해결하게 하시기 위하여 한 분을 보내셨으니, 그분이 바로 문선명 선생이시다”라고 주장, 문씨가 한국에 재림한 메시아임을 밝히고 있다.

Traditional and conventional churches in Korea confirm the Unification Church as a heresy and/or a cult organization. According to ‘Heresies in Korea’ published by the Presbyterian Church of Korea (Tonghap), quotes that ‘the Unification Church is obviously a heresy, since it denies the completed redemption and salvation by Jesus Christ and it argues that the salvation accomplished by Jesus Christ is not perfect and also it claims that the Second Coming of Christ was already born in a specific country.’

이러한 통일교의 주장에 대해 한국 기독교 교단들은 “이단”,“사이비”로 결의했다. 대한예수교장로회 통합 측에서 발간한 『기독교의 이단들』에는 통일교를 가리켜 “예수 그리스도의 완전한 구속적 사건을 무시하고, 구원을 얻기 위해서는 수수작용을 통하여 가능하다고 주장, 재림에 대해서는 억지 해석과 특정 지역의 재림을 주장하고 있다”며 “정통 기독교와 길을 달리하는 분명한 ‘이단’이다”라고 정리했다.

3. Current Status of the Unification Church

There are about two hundred and ten (210) Unification Churches in Korea; Seoul, Gyeonggido, Incheon, Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gyeongsang, and Jeju. At the press conference held on January 18th, 2011, Mr. Hyung Jin Moon (Former chairman of the Unification Church) disclosed that the number of followers of the Unification Church in Korea was nineteen thousand (19,000), as of the end of 2010. The Unifica-tion Church purchased Yongsan district’s community center building and restructured it to the Cheon Bok Gung Church, its headquarter.

3. 통일교 국내 현황 및 근황

현재 국내 통일교는 서울, 경기, 인천, 강원, 충청, 전라, 경상, 제주도 등 전국적으로 210여 교회가 있다. 문형진(전 통일교 세계회장)씨는 2011년 1월 18일 서울 종로 프레스센터에서 열린 기자간담회에서 국내 신도 수가 2010년 말 현재 1만 9000명이라고 밝혔다. 통일교는 용산구민회관을 매입,천복궁교회를 건립했다.

After Leader Moon’s death, Mr. Hyung Jin Moon was appointed as a successor and became the world chairman of the Unification Church. However, Ms Han, his mother insists that she has very same authority and power with Leader Moon, and the Unification Church is sharply divided into two parts; Mr. Moon and Ms Han. Ms Sun Jin Moon, the first daughter ofLeader Moon and Ms Han, became the world chairman of the Unification Church. And Mr. Hyung Jin Moon founded Sanctuary Church in Pennsylvania, USA which is independent from the main stream of the Unification Church under control of his mother.

문선명씨 사망 이후 문형진씨가 통일교 세계회장으로 취임하는 등 후계구도 안정에 박차를 가하는 것으로 보였으나, 어머니 한학자씨가 문선명씨와 동등권을 주장하는 등의 문제로 둘은 갈라졌다. 이후 장녀 문선진씨가 세계회장으로 취임했고, 문형진씨는 미국 펜실베이니아주에서 생츄어리처치를 개척해 독자노선을 구축했다.

The Unification Church without powerful leadership of Leader Moon goes through very unstable stage. Ms Han argues that she is the only begotten daughter of God and there is a huge gap between her argument and old doctrine of Leader Moon. Mr. Hyung Jin Moon requests his followers for being fully armed during the service for formation of Peace Army and his insistence does not make clear sense to the followers. However, the Unification Church will not be easily collapsed, since it owns many companies which are financially stable. Many heresy professionals anticipate that many followers of the Unification Church will leave two main streams of the Unification Church and will form small groups for themselves.

문선명이 부재한 통일교는 좀 처럼 안정되지 않고 있다. 한학자를 따르자니 자신을 독생녀라고 선포하는 등 새로운 교리가 혼란스럽고 문형진에 비해 정통성이 떨어진다. 문형진을 따르자니 평화군 경찰을 조직한다며 총·칼을 갖추라는 주장을 수긍하기 어렵다. 하지만 튼튼한 기업이 뒷받침되고 있어 통일교가 쉽게 무너질 것으로 보이지는 않는다. 이단 전문가들은 많은 신도가 통일교를 떠나 그들만의 통일교를 만들어 소규모 공동체를 유지할 것으로 내다보는 가운데, 통일교의 미래가 주목된다.
